Learning objectives

  • Identify and describe the key characteristics of different legal traditions, systems and families
  • Compare and contrast legal traditions, identifying similarities, differences, and underlying principles
  • Explain and trace the historical development of the common law tradition and its evolution in England & Wales, the United States, and India
  • Apply and accurately use fundamental legal and political concepts such as precedent, stare decisis, equity, judiciary, legislature, constitution, federalism, secularism... in written and oral work
  • Identify, interpret and analyse judicial and legislative documents: judicial opinions, case summaries, statutes, acts, bills, drafts etc.
  • Evaluate the significance and value of comparing different legal traditions, systems, and families.

Language objectives

  • Comprehend spoken English used in authentic legal contexts
  • Communicate fundamental legal principles and arguments clearly and confidently in spoken English
  • Analyse legal texts and academic articles written in English (terminology subtleties)
  • Produce clear, well-structured written summaries and basic legal arguments in English
  • Employ basic legal terminology appropriately in English
